Cubase 15: Exploring Omnivocal

Find out just what’s possible — and what’s not — with Cubase’s new virtual vocalist.

Steinberg dropped something of a leftfield surprise with Cubase 15: the inclusion of Yamaha’s Omnivocal. Supplied initially in a beta form but available to Pro, Artist and Elements users, Omnivocal is a virtual vocalist instrument plug‑in. Of course, Yamaha have a longstanding history in vocal synthesis — for example, it was way back in March 2004 that we first reviewed their Vocaloid software, whose synthetic vocals have spawned something of their own genre online, particularly within the anime/manga world. But in recent years, developers such as Dreamtonics and ACE Studio have used AI techniques to push vocal synthesis technology forwards, allowing users to craft remarkably natural‑sounding and expressive vocal lines from a virtual instrument in much the same way as they might for a virtual string or wind instrument.

On the surface, it would appear that Omnivocal aims to do something similar — in essence, you just instantiate it on an instrument track, record (or program) a standard MIDI clip with the desired melody, and Omnivocal will then synthesize a human vocal to ‘sing’ those notes. So for those who’ve upgraded to Cubase 15 or are considering it, let’s find out exactly what you can expect from your new virtual session singer...

Singing Lessons

As with other virtual instruments, you can choose between different sounding presets. In its current beta form Omnivocal lets you choose between a male or a female singer, but I gather more options featuring different singing characters are planned for the future. You also get a number of parameters that can adjust the sound character of each singer. For example, you can pick between Straight (more subdued) and Dynamic (more expressive) singing styles.

There are also automatable parameters, such as Formant, Attack, Air, Power and Vibrato, all of which can change the character of the vocal delivery. You can automate these parameters, but they require the synthesis engine to re‑render the sung vocal to reflect your changes. While this happens automatically and very quickly in the background, it does mean that you can’t actually adjust these controls in real time like you might with, for example, a synth’s filter cutoff. That said, pitch‑bend data and the Presence (a tonal control) and Output dials operate outside the vocal synthesis engine, so they can be adjusted in real time.

Initially, your melodic line will be sung with an ‘ah’ vowel sound for each note, but you can enter your own lyrics in the Text box on the MIDI Editor’s Info line. It has to be said that, in its current beta form, this aspect of Omnivocal feels a little cumbersome in operation. You can enter lyrics one note at a time, but you can also enter multiple words. For example, entering ‘broken heart’ into the Text box of the first note of a three‑note phrase would spread the words on a one‑syllable‑per‑note basis. So, the syllables of ‘broken’ would be placed into the first two notes (with the ‘oh’ sound being sustained across the two notes) and ‘heart’ into the third note.

In addition, you can enter some special characters, the most important being a hyphen (‘‑’), which forces the engine to extend a vowel sound across multiple MIDI notes. You can also customise the phonemes used in the Text box (the Omnivocal PDF manual has useful information on this) but learning how to finesse the pronunciation of your lyrics is something that will require a little trial‑and‑error experimentation.

That caveat aside, with your notes and lyrics added, Omnivocal will apply its AI‑assisted engine (all the processing is done locally and based on a voicebank of data for each virtual vocalist) to render the vocal part and, on playback, it is then performed with the rest of your project. And, of course, as with any virtual instrument, you can then change the performance by editing the MIDI note pitch, timing and lengths, changing the lyrics, or adjusting the vocal character as required.

Getting Hooked

Whether it’s in the writing/composing phase, or as a key production element in a top‑tier final mix, we’re now all very accustomed to the concept of virtual instruments being an integral part of the music that we hear. So, in that context, where can this initial Omnivocal beta release get us? Is it useful only as a writing tool (a less ambitious bar to jump) or can it deliver a final performance (a much higher bar)?

To answer that question, I’ve worked through a few examples, and you can find some audio clips to accompany them on the SOS website (https://sosm.ag/cubase-0226). I started with a simple target in my sights: creating a vocal hook or two that might be used in an electronic music project. The screenshot with the MIDI clip shows an example of what’s required for this sort of thing. I played the melody in from my MIDI keyboard (Omnivocal provides a simple synth sound for auditioning purposes as you play), over the top of a suitable backing track. I then entered the lyrical content in the Text box, one phrase at a time, and Omnivocal mapped each phrase across the appropriate number of notes based on the syllable count.

This simple vocal hook idea was more rhythmic than melodic, and once the lyrics were rendered by the engine I did some tweaking of note timings and lengths to improve the flow of the vocal delivery. I also picked the Dynamic delivery mode, and set both Attack and Power quite high to provide a more forceful performance style. But while there was some tweaking involved, the initial process was remarkably quick: just a few minutes’ work. As demonstrated in the audio example, I then generated a number of different variants with some ear‑candy processing applied to spice things up. I’ll make no great claims for the composition(!) but in sonic terms at least I feel that Omnivocal is a perfectly capable tool for experimenting with these kinds of vocal ideas.

Back Me Up

If you already have a human lead vocal in your project, a second possible use case for Omnivocal would be to experiment with potential harmony and/or backing vocal parts. Again, you can create the required Omnivocal MIDI by playing along to the lead vocal part using your MIDI keyboard. But I adopted a different approach for this example, instead applying Cubase Pro’s VariAudio to my lead vocal, then exporting the extracted MIDI note data. This MIDI data was then imported into my initial Omnivocal track for preparatory editing and the addition of the lyrical data.

It’s at this point that the ‘utility’ nature of Omnivocal comes to the fore, because whatever type of backing vocal part you want to experiment with (double, octave, third‑above or counter‑melody, say), it’s now easily explored with MIDI edits. And if you want multiple backing lines, then just duplicate the first and edit the notes. I explored precisely this workflow to create the second audio example, going from some simple doubles to a pair of basic third‑above harmonies, and then finally to something closer to a counter melody... and all with the ease of MIDI editing, which included some subtle randomisation of the note start positions for each harmony part. Whether Omnivocal’s backing lines make it to your final mix or not is another matter, but it certainly makes it easy to explore ideas for backing‑vocal parts in the absence of an actual singer.

Take My Lead

By this stage, it shouldn’t take much of a leap for you to start wondering if Omnivocal could be used to generate lead vocal demos as a guide for an actual human vocalist. Well, it can, and the basic process remains the same. As with the backing vocal example, once you have an initial Omnivocal performance, the simplicity with which you can edit the timing, pitch, lyrics and, to a certain degree, the performance style, make it a really useful songwriting tool.

That just leaves one obvious and very big question: can Omnivocal deliver lead vocals that are good enough to use in a final mix? Well, context is everything here, of course, and Omnivocal is still in beta, so expecting it to jump over the highest of realism bars at this point is perhaps unrealistic. Right now, I think the answer is ‘probably not’! For fun, though, my final audio example is a comparison between an Omnivocal lead vocal and the same vocal part created using Dreamtonics’ Synth V. Currently, the most obvious challenges when using Omnivocal are in crafting notes where words flow across multiple pitches. There are also limitations when it comes to adjusting the length of and emphasis placed upon particular syllables to influence pronunciation and delivery style.

But fingers crossed, there is more to come, and in any case don’t let any of that stop you exploiting Ominvocal’s considerable potential as a vocal sketching tool. Hats off to Yamaha/Steinberg for bundling this fledgling virtual singer instrument with every main edition of Cubase 15: whether you’re a Pro, Artist or Elements user, if you can hum it (or rather, play it on a MIDI keyboard), Omnivocal can sing it.

Cubase 15: Modulators As Macro Controls

Could Flow‑style macro controls, courtesy of Cubase’s powerful Modulators, enable you to mix more quickly?

When I’m mixing, after making some initial adjustments to individual tracks that are very obviously required, I’ll often shift my focus pretty quickly to the buses — both my various instrument subgroups and the stereo master. My intention is to make rapid progress by applying broad‑brush strokes to the mix, before my ears grow too accustomed to the sound. In general, this will involve setting an initial static mix balance between the instrument groups using the faders, and then some decisions around compression and EQ.

I recently explored — and was impressed by — Softube’s Flow Mixing Suite (my review is in this very issue), and found it really useful at this stage of a mix, and its macro controls particularly intrigued me. They’re a set of knobs that can each be mapped to control one or more key parameters in a multi‑plug‑in signal chain. For example, a single ‘compression’ macro control might influence both the threshold and make‑up gain controls of a dynamics plug‑in, so that as you turn the macro control, it applies more compression by lowering the threshold, but simultaneously increases the make‑up gain to compensate for the loss in level. As well as saving you having to turn two knobs to achieve one task, this approach means you don’t have to keep opening/closing individual plug‑ins, and you can keep your screen relatively uncluttered.

But of course, impressive as it is, the Softube system works only with Softube’s plug‑ins, and so, with this experience fresh in my mind, I decided to see if I might emulate the approach in Cubase, using the Pro version’s Modulator feature. It worked pretty well, and below I’ll take you through some examples.

There isn’t a tilt EQ in Cubase’s stock plug‑in collection... but with a little bit of Modulator magic you can create one based on the stock Studio EQ.

One‑knob Wonder

Let’s start with that compressor example. For this experiment, I instantiated Cubase’s Black Valve plug‑in on my project’s main lead vocal bus, but you could apply the same principles to any of Cubase’s stock compressors, used on any audio signal. With my vocal bus (a group channel) selected, I opened the Modulator panel in the Project window’s Lower Zone, then popped that open as a separate floating window (use the arrow button, located top right of the pane). That let me see it alongside the MixConsole, not just in the Project window.

Need to fake a double from a single vocal? Cubase has plenty of options...

When it comes to vocal doubles, if you want to keep things sounding ‘natural’ then nothing beats a well‑sung second pass. There are plenty of circumstances where that might not be possible, but thankfully, if you have only a single lead line and need a double on the double, Cubase has a number of tools that can fake one. And if you already have the Artist or Pro version of Cubase 15, you now have yet another option at your disposal: the new PitchShifter plug‑in. In this article, I’ll explore a range of options. Something Old

When vocals are authentically doubled‑tracked by a singer, the differences in both pitch and timing of the performances lend the part a sense of additional ‘weight’ and, with suitable panning, width. Generally, it works best when those pitch and timing differences are pretty small, and being sufficiently consistent across two or more vocal performances can require considerable control on the part of a singer — but, of course, some after‑the‑fact audio editing can help to a degree.

Assuming, though, that you need to fake such a double, Artist and Pro users have a particularly powerful option that exploits VariAudio and AudioWarp. We considered exactly this combination in SOS October 2022 (https://sosm.ag/cubase-1022-doubling), including the possibility of generating harmony parts. That approach still works well, so I’ll reiterate the key steps here as they pertain to creating a vocal double, but do dip into that article if you want more detail.

The first step is simply to duplicate the lead vocal track. Open this duplicate in the Sample Editor, and in the Sample Editor’s VariAudio panel activate VariAudio. This will populate the Sample Editor display with note objects, and if you select these and then trigger playback, you can (back in the VariAudio panel) make minor adjustments to the Correct Pitch, Straighten Curve and Shift Formant sliders. As you do, you’ll start to hear the original and ‘double’ vocals deviate from each other.

Looking to hype up your drum sound? Cubase’s new UltraShaper plug‑in might be just what you need!

In SOS January 2026, I explored dynamics processing for acoustic drums at a number of different points in the signal chain (read it here). My aim then was to retain a natural sound while controlling the drum dynamics. But what if you want a more aggressive or ‘hyped’ sound coming from your drum bus? Well, Cubase’s stock plug‑in collection has long had plenty of options for more assertive processing, including some you can use in combination. Cubase Pro 15, though, introduced a new option that’s well worth exploring: UltraShaper. Let’s find out just how much drum hype can you extract from this powerful new plug‑in.

Sum Of The Parts

Before we unleash UltraShaper on our drum bus, I’ll share two quick observations. First, don’t assume that UltraShaper is simply a reworking of some of Cubase’s existing stock plug‑ins. I don’t think that’s the case and, in any case, UltraShaper is rather more than the sum of its parts. Second, note that UltraShaper has plenty of scope to do ‘subtle’, and it isn’t just for drums; it can do a perfectly good turn on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass or synths, and has potential applications for both individual tracks and group busses, or even your stereo mix bus. Steinberg really have brought us something of a dynamics Swiss Army knife!

Park It On The Bus

For my first exploration, I simply inserted UltraShaper on my drum bus. Whether you’re dealing with acoustic drums or electronic drums (I’ve used both in the Audio Examples that accompany this workshop on the SOS website: https://sosm.ag/cubase-0526), you can start pretty easily by dialling in UltraShaper’s more conventional compressor controls: threshold, ratio, attack and release. These will do exactly what you might expect for any kind of conventional compression task.

Even used for such standard tasks, UltraShaper has a couple of nice touches up its sleeve. First, it has a real‑time waveform and gain‑reduction display that provides excellent visual feedback as you adjust the controls. Optionally, you can also show the compression curve beside this.

Perhaps more significant, though, is the Auto Gain control, which is pretty clever. While it’s not quite a ‘set and forget’ option (it interacts with some of the other control options), it’s pretty easy to set it so that when you bypass UltraShaper, the processed and unprocessed sounds can be closely level matched, even as you make adjustments elsewhere. This makes it far easier to judge exactly what your threshold and ratio settings are doing to the character of the audio, and reduces the risk of significant volume differences clouding your processing...

Cubase’s new synth sounds and Pattern Sequencer features are great on their own — but together they’re even better!

Steinberg introduced the Pattern Editor for Pro and Artist users in Cubase 14. While obviously pairing well with the (also new in 14) Drum Machine track/instrument type, as we explored in the SOS May 2025 workshop, you could also use Pattern Editor for melodic applications. But in Cubase 15, Steinberg took the Pattern Editor concept further. It now offers two distinct modes: Drum and Melodic.

The latter is new, and adds some very useful additional options to those I explored in the May 2025 article. So, let’s get into ‘writing mode’ and explore it, along with the new HALion/HALion Sonic Writing Room Synths expansion (also available in Artist and Pro).

To do that, I’ll target some analogue synth‑style sequenced bass, chord and melody ideas. And to help give you an idea of what I’m writing about, I’ve put an audio example on the SOS website (http://sosm.ag/cubase-0626).

Something Old, Something New

If you select the Pattern Event option when creating a new virtual instrument track, the Lower Zone automatically opens and offers a choice between the Drum or Melodic mode within the Pattern Editor. Both of these modes share many of the core features described for the earlier iteration of the Pattern Editor, providing a lane‑based sequencer grid with customisable step numbers (up to 128 steps), per‑lane and per‑step sequencing of parameters such as velocity, velocity variance and playback probability, and the option to add additional controller lanes related to parameters within the selected virtual instrument.

As I described in the SOS May 2025 workshop, patterns can be created manually on the grid in the usual way, but you also get a selection of tools for automatically populating the whole pattern, or a lane within the pattern — either in a completely controlled way, or harnessing a user‑specified degree of randomisation. It’s cool, creative, and can easily be used to nudge a new idea into being. All this core functionality remains but, as in the main screenshot, Cubase 15’s new Melodic mode has additional elements that directly support this use case; I’ll focus on those below.

When you opt for Melodic mode, many familiar elements appear in the Lower Zone’s Pattern Editor, but there are some new and revised options to suit the melodic context. A similar grid‑based pattern editing panel dominates the display, but it’s now a conventional pitch‑based grid for your melodic instrument, rather than lanes corresponding to individual drums. You can adjust the step count and resolution as before, but when creating notes these can span multiple...

Cubase Pro: Folder Tracks and Group Channels in v15.0.20

Could the new Folder Track features in Cubase help you better organise your projects?

Once a Cubase project’s track count starts to grow, two of its track types can be really helpful in keeping things organised, efficient and under control: Folder Tracks and Group Channels (or, as labelled in the Operation Manual PDF, ‘Group Channel Tracks’!). The former are essentially just containers that let you organise tracks in the Project window, and quickly control their visibility. The latter provide all the features of a standard audio‑carrying channel (inserts, sends, EQ, the Channel Strip etc) but also help you organise the audio routing in more complex projects, allowing Cubase’s MixConsole to emulate the audio subgroup concept of a traditional hardware mixer. Putting both to full use makes managing more complex projects a whole lot easier, but both have been around for quite some time now...

Groups Meet Folders, Folders Meet Groups

In the recent Cubase 15.0.20 update of Cubase Pro, Artist and Elements, though, Steinberg sprang a bit of a surprise: it’s now possible to merge the functionality of Folders and Groups into what you might think of as a ‘super‑Folder’. It’s optional, so the tried and trusted options are still available, but now, when adding a Folder Track to your project (as shown in the screenshots), you have the option to enable Group Track‑like capabilities for any Folder you create. You can also add this capability to existing Folders, of course.

This combined Folder/Group Track option is a feature some users have been requesting for years, probably because a number of other DAWs already facilitate such an approach, so it’s great to see it in Cubase. So, with ‘Folders As Groups’ now official A Thing, let’s consider what it can do for your project management and workflow — and whether there are any catches.

As soon as your track count requires vertical scrolling of the Project window’s Track List, the convenience of using Folders is abundantly apparent. Whether the new Folder type or the old ones, probably the most obvious strategy is to add one for each subset of your tracks (drums, bass, guitars, keys, vocals...).

Cubase Pro: Reference Tracks

Cubase offers various options for comparing your mixes with reference tracks.

When Sample Magic announced that they'd soon stop supporting their Magic AB plug-in, some of you asked me to recommend other mix-referencing tools. Several plug-in options exist, including Mastering The Mix's Reference, Melda's MCompare, and ADPTR's Metric AB, but you may be able to do what you want using Cubase alone...

If you don't use master bus processing, this can work well: keep the reference track muted, and when you solo it, it will play and all the other tracks will be muted. But if you use master-bus processing, as many of us do, you don't want to apply this processing to your references. There are a couple of ways around this.

One is to create a second stereo output in the Studio/Audio Connections window and route your reference track to that. This bypasses the processing but now your references aren't reflected on the master-bus loudness metering. If that's important to you, you could use a Group track as your master bus, and route that and your reference track to the default stereo output (on which you put no processing).

Right On Cue

Cubase Pro's Control Room offers an alternative. Although (curiously) the Control Room doesn't allow you to select different output busses, you can monitor artist cue mixes, and can route your references to one of those. Go to Studio/Audio Connections, make sure the Control Room is activated, and in the Control Room tab hit Add Channel. Select Add Cue, create a stereo Cue Mix with a meaningful name (eg. 'Reference'), and leave it routed to no output.

Again, you'll need a track in your project to host your reference tracks. Set its output to No Bus. Strangely, there's no option to display the Cue Mixes in the Track Inspector, so to send your reference track to your Cue Mix you'll need to open the track's Channel Settings window (you'll find Cue Sends in a tab adjacent to the regular sends) or the MixConsole (if Cue Sends aren't there make them visible via the Racks drop-down). Enable the Reference send and set it to unity gain. In the Control Room section of the mixer, next to the main Mix button, you'll see a button marked C1 (for Cue Mix 1). With your mix playing, hit C1 to toggle between monitoring your reference track and your mix project. If you go to Edit / Key Commands and search for Cue 1 On/Off, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to this action.

It's pretty slick, but there are a couple of down sides. First, Cubase gives you a rather meagre ration of Cue Mixes — you have a maximum of four in your project — which could be problematic if you need them for another purpose. Second, Cubase's master-bus metering continues to tell you what's happening in your mix while you listen to your references — so if you want to match the loudness of the reference to that of your mix (as you should) you'll need a separate loudness meter on your reference track, which is a bit of an inconvenience.

Although (curiously) the Control Room doesn't allow you to select different output busses, you can monitor artist cue mixes, and can route your references to one of those.

The Logical Approach

Here's an approach that uses Cubase's powerful Project Logical Editor (PLE) and Macro facilities. We'll use these to automate both the 'simple' A/B mute/solo approach described above, and the bypassing of the master bus processing. As with other approaches, you'll need to create a track for your references, but this time leave it and your mix routed to the main Stereo Out. Name this track 'Reference' and mute it.

Next, we'll make four simple PLE presets to use in our Macro. A little quirk of Cubase is that you need to be in the Project page to access the PLE (I have no idea why!). From here, go to Project / Project Logical Editor. The PLE can appear daunting, but we can just customise an existing preset. I started with the 'Visibility — Show Tracks containing Drum in the Name' preset. In the top section, change the second row's Condition from 'Contains not' to 'Equal' and change Parameter 1 from 'Drum' to 'Reference'. The bottom section tells the PLE what action to perform, so change the Operation from 'Hide Track' to 'Solo'. That's your first PLE preset done, so click on the + icon at the top to save this as a new preset called 'Reference — Solo'.

Next change the Operation from 'Solo' to 'Mute' and save it again, this time as 'Reference — Mute'. With the same PLE window still open, in the top section, change the second row's Parameter 1 from 'Reference' to 'Stereo Out', and in the bottom section change the Operation to 'Inserts Bypass'. Save this as a preset called 'Stereo Out — Bypass Inserts'. Finally, change Parameter 1 in the bottom section from 'Enable' to 'Disable', which does the reverse (it will reactivate the Stereo Out bus's inserts) and save this as 'Stereo Out — Activate Inserts'.

These simple Macros run the Project Logical Editor presets and bypass the master-bus processing whenever the reference track is soloed. Go to Edit /Key Commands and open the Macro window at the bottom. Hit the New Macro button, and label your Macro 'Reference Track — On'. In the upper pane's search bar type 'Process Project' to take you to the relevant folder (I find this quicker than scrolling). Open this, and locate the PLE presets you just created. Select 'Stereo Out — Bypass Inserts' and hit the Add Command button. Then select 'Reference — Solo' and hit the Add Command button again. Create another new Macro called 'Reference Track — Off' and add the commands 'Reference — Mute' and 'Stereo Out — Activate Inserts'.

You'll find your two new Macros in the Macro folder in the upper pane, and here you can assign them shortcut keys. Sadly, I've been unable to find a way to toggle between the two Macros with a single key command, but I did find easy to remember shortcuts: Ctrl+R for 'Reference Track — On' and Shift+Ctrl+R for 'Reference Track — Off'. It's worth mentioning that I'm on a Mac, so the Ctrl key may be assigned to different functions on Windows, but you get the idea. Now, with your mix playing back, hit Ctrl+R to switch to your references, and Shift+Ctrl+R to switch back to your mix.

If the solo issue really bothers you, put the 'Deactivate All Solo States' command at the beginning of your 'Reference Track — On' Macro, though note that you'd have to re-solo things when you switched back to your mix. Note also that you won't be able to take advantage of Cubase's Solo Defeat Mode. On the plus side, you can use Cubase's loudness metering to make sure your reference is at the same level as that particular part of your mix (using clip gain on the references is the best approach), and thus ensure that you're making objective comparisons.

Decisions, Decisions...

While none of these options for monitoring reference tracks and clips is perfect, they can all work pretty well if they fit your own workflow. Each one offers different pros and cons — hopefully there's a tactic here that will do the job for you.
